Former NBA MVP Kevin Durant has criticized his own team after the Brooklyn Nets suspended teammate Kyrie Irving over his current antisemitic scandal. Irving was suspended without pay for five games after failing to apologize for sharing an anti-Semitic film on his social media platforms. The 30-year-old guard apologized during an impromptu press conference at practice on Thursday.
Durant was speaking to the media during the Nets’ shootaround in Washington prior of their game against the Wizards. When asked about Irving’s recent comments, the two-time NBA champion stated that the Nets should have kept the situation under wraps.

“I ain’t here to condemn anybody or talk down on anybody for how they feel, their ideas, or anything,” the 34-year-old stated. I didn’t enjoy anything that happened. It all seemed pointless to me. We could have just kept playing basketball and remained silent as an organization, in my opinion.”

Durant responded within an hour with a tweet clarifying his statement. “Just want to clarify the words I made at shootaround, I notice some people are confused,” he added in the post. “I never condone hate speech or anti-Semitism (sic); I’m always about promoting love.” Our game brings people together, and I want to make sure that’s at the forefront.”
Kyrie Irving will miss games against the Washington Wizards, the Charlotte Hornets, the Dallas Mavericks, the New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Clippers. Brooklyn will rely on Kevin Durant to shoulder the weight and potentially improve on their disastrous start. Prior to their game versus Washington, the Nets had won only two of their first eight games.
