England Team Analysis FIFA World Cup 2022

Goalkeeper

Jordan Pickford, a standout for Everton, was a constant for England during their recent two major tournament runs to the semifinals and final.

His exploits in penalty shootouts further strengthened his position as Southgate’s No. 1, and even though he missed the UEFA Nations League games in September due to injury, he still has first choice, with Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale serving as backups.

Defence

At full-back, Southgate previously had an abundance of options, but injury worries over Kyle Walker and the absence of Reece James will factor into his final decisions, and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed out on Euro 2021, is back in the mix.

Ben Chilwell’s injury also affected left back, and regular right back Kieran Trippier is now a must-have on the final squad given his versatility to replace starter Luke Shaw on the other wing.

Walker will be included if they are able to return to club play before the World Cup, but Harry Maguire, the captain of United, is still in question. Despite his difficulties at United, Maguire is still important to Southgate, and he will almost certainly be paired with John Stones in either a back four or a three-man defense.

Midfield

Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips’ defensive pivot gave England a foundation to build from at Euro 2021, and if Phillips can somehow regain health, they are set to continue their connection in Qatar. The quick emergence of Jude Bellingham gives Southgate an additional choice.

Mason Mount may start as the link player between midfield and attack depending on the formation, and England’s manager must decide whether to select Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson or a more youthful, dynamic player like Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

Forwards

Southgate’s undoubted starting is captain Harry Kane, who has a chance to shatter England’s all-time goal record in Qatar.

Raheem Sterling’s goals at Euro 2021 were essential, and if he continues to play well for Chelsea, he will remain in the starting lineup. Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish will compete for the other starting slot in an advanced offensive role.

Although Southgate is well-stocked with possibilities, finding Kane a different, more conventional partner could prove to be more difficult.

If Plan A needs to be changed, Callum Wilson of Newcastle and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United would provide Southgate one other option.
