In 2020, Gustavo Alfaro joined the Ecuadorian national team with the intention of developing the up-and-coming football talent of the nation. The intention was to compete for a spot in the 2026 World Cup, but by making it to the 2022 competition, they have achieved success. Only Argentina and Brazil have’surpassed’ them. Ecuador will participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite numerous off-field concerns in the lead-up to the competition with the hopes of competing for a knockout stage position.
Throughout the round-robin qualifying campaign for the CONMEBOL World Cup, Ecuador would not give up, fighting above their weight and aggravating South American giants Brazil and Argentina.
La Tri had a direct flight to Qatar as a result, and they were placed in a tough Group A with the hosts Qatar, the Netherlands, and Senegal.
La Tri will go to the World Cup finals at the expense of their South American opponents despite a disagreement with Chile and Peru over a probable ineligible player during World Cup qualification. Their final lineup was revealed on Monday, November 14.

Ecuador national team stars, strengths & weaknesses
As Ecuador begins play at the FIFA World Cup in 2022, manager Gustavo Alfaro has a wealth of youthful potential to work upon.
In 2020, the Argentine Alfaro takes charge of the Ecuadorian team. During his 30-year management career, he has had managerial positions with a number of teams, including Boca Juniors, Al-Ahli, and Rosario Central.
Enner Valencia, who currently plays for the Turkish team Fenerbahce, is the most well-known player on the Ecuadorian team. Valencia played for West Ham and Everton for much of his lengthy Premier League career before playing for Tigres for three seasons in Liga MX. In 12 Turkish Super Lig games this season, he has scored 13 goals and provided assists for four more, moving back to Europe to join Fenerbahce.
The up-and-coming talents on the European scene include Real Valladolid’s 21-year-old Gonzalo Plata and the versatile Moises Caicedo and Pervis Estupinan, who start for Brighton in the Premier League and are already making an impact in La Liga.
The Ecuadorian team boasts a midfield with a lot of emerging youthful talent that is exceptionally deep. In addition to Caicedo, another player that can fit in is LAFC’s much sought-after 23-year-old Jose Cifuentes. Veteran Carlos Gruezo, who plays for Augsburg in the Bundesliga, is the fixture’s experienced leader..
Enner Valencia, a standout in Ecuador’s attack, is in charge of scoring goals, but as he gets older (he’s 33), there aren’t many young players expected to step up. Michael Estrada of Cruz Azul has played as a striker, but in his last 13 international games, he has only scored once. Joao Rojas, a playmaker for Liga MX team Monterrey, tore his ACL, severely reducing the offensive options.
Ecuador Group FIFA World Cup 2022
La Tri will open World Cup play in Group A, which also includes hosts Qatar, Senegal, the Netherlands, and other established African nations.
The single game on the first day of the tournament is Ecuador’s matchup against Qatar on November 20.
There are no games in which three points can be confidently anticipated, but there is also no real dominant side (No. 8-ranked Netherlands were a Pot 2 pick, with hosts Qatar serving as the Pot 1 side).
The hosts are most likely the weakest opposition, yet the host bump is a genuine, well-documented threat. As both the Netherlands and Senegal will be aiming for a place in the knockout stage, Ecuador will need to play spoiler if they want to advance to the coveted Round of 16.

Ecuador Predicted starting XI
There are a few decisions for Gustavo Alfaro to make as he selects his starting lineup.
In goal, he can go with experienced veteran Alexander Dominguez or recent starter Hernan Galindez, who started the final four World Cup qualifiers as well as a recent friendly against Japan.
Young Piero Hincapie is a lock to start at center-back, but his partner is in question. Veteran Roberto Arboleda is an option if he regains full fitness, as is MLS-based Xavier Arreaga.
Up front, the ever-present Enner Valencia should start, with Angel Mena in support. Romario Ibarra and young Gonzalo Plata should also see significant playing time on the wings.
Ecuador lineup (4-2-3-1, left to right): Dominguez (GK) — Estupinan, Hincapie, Torres, Preciado — M. Caicedo, Gruezo — Mena, Valencia, Plata — Estrada.
