The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to debut the long-awaited women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) in March 2023 as a five-team league.

The women’s IPL will comprise 20 league games, with clubs playing each other twice, according to a notice given by the BCCI to state associations, according to the news agency Press Trust of India. The top two teams will advance directly to the final, while the third and fourth teams will compete in the Eliminator. Each squad can have 18 players, with a maximum of six from outside the country.

“It has been informally agreed to have five teams for WIPL in order to have a well-balanced mix of native and international players and to have competitive teams.” Each squad can have a maximum of eighteen players, and no side can have more than six foreign players.

“Furthermore, no more than five overseas players – four from Full Members of the ICC and one from Associate Members of the ICC – can be part of each team’s playing XI,” the BCCI notice stated.

“Like the IPL, playing in the home-away format in the WIPL will be difficult, since with five to six teams, it will be impossible to have a match every day.” It is recommended that the tournament be played in a caravan format, with the first 10 matches played at one location and the next ten matches played at the next.

“As a result, ten matches each will be played across two venues in the 2023 WIPL season, ten matches each in the next two venues in the 2024 season, and ten matches in the remaining one venue and the remaining ten in one of the venues from the 2023 season in the 2025 season.”

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai are among the major cities. The IPL governing council and BCCI office-bearers will make the final decision on all Women’s IPL affairs.
